A Heat Map is a space-filling display that shows two levels of data. Categories in a field are aggregated, then optionally grouped by a second categorical field. So a Heat Map visualizes up to 4 dimensions (category, group, size, color). The size and color of rectangular chart areas may be set based on data. This space-filling display lets you visually identify patterns and outliers based on size and color. Learn about each Heat Map feature below:

Groups of Categories: nested rectangular areas in the chart.

  • The entire display area of the Heat Map chart is divided into abutting rectangles that correspond to categories in a field of data. These areas can be further divided into categories from a second, "Detail", field.

  • The areas are sized to be proportional to the count of rows, or to the value aggregated from a numeric field for each detailed category.

  • The areas can be colored from a private scale based on the aggregated value of another field. Alternatively, coloring can be taken from the global coloring for the table, if it is mapped to the categories in either of the first two fields (i.e., there is no "color stacking").

    From: Chart Toolbar "Configure Data".

Text: labels and titles.

  • Text for the chart title may be changed, along with the fonts. Display of the title is optional.

Color Range: colors applied to data.

  • Areas in the Heat Map may be colored based on some aggregation of values in a numeric table field, as specified in the configuration dialog. The colors are taken from a red-to-green scale by default. (If no coloring field is given, colors from the table are used if they are all the same for each lowest level item.) You can specify the end and middle points of the color scale by setting the Advanced Properties "High Value Color", "Low Value Color", and "Middle Value Color". Colors are chosen by extrapolating between the high and middle value colors, and between the middle and low value colors.

From: Advanced Properties "High Value Color", "Low Value Color", "Middle Value Color".
